MADPOD Jack Blades Interview Night Ranger, Damn Yankees

Jack Blades Interview Madpod
In addition to fronting one of the mid 80's most successful mainstream/arena rock bands, Night Ranger, bassist/singer Jack Blades has either recorded with, penned songs for, or produced albums for some of rock's biggest names. Originally hailing from Palm Springs, California, Blades joined countless local bands in the Southern California area during the early '70s, during which time he attended San Diego State University (as a pre-med student). By the latter part of the decade, Blades had relocated to San Francisco, where he joined the dance-rock group Rubicon. The band issued a pair of obscure releases, 1978's self-titled debut and 1980's American Dreams, before splitting up. Blades and Rubicon guitarist Brad Gillis decided to form a new band together, one that would be more aligned to hard rock than their previous outfit. The early '80s saw the formation of Night Ranger, along with members Alan Fitzgerald (keyboards), Jeff Watson (guitar), and Kelly Keagy (drums, vocals), who fit in perfectly with such then-thriving melodic rockers as Journey, Loverboy, and Van Halen. It didn't take long for Blades to re-appear in another similarly styled band however, the all-star Damn Yankees, which consisted of Tommy Shaw, Ted Nugent, and Michael Cartellone. Jack Blades speaks with Shadoe from his home in the San Francisco's Bay area.
Interview courtesy of Jeff Albright - THE ALBRIGHT ENTERTAINMENT GROUP & RockStarPR@aol.com

Subscribe to the feed
Subscribe with iTunes

Interview arrangements courtesy of Jeff Abraham.
At their peak in the 1970s, Cheech and Chong represented the mainstream =embodiment of the attitudes and lifestyles of the underground drug =culture. Much as <A href=3D"http://www.allmusic.com/cg/amg.dll?p=3Dam=g&sql=3D11:06vsa9tgb23f">W.C. Fields shot to fame by making =alcohol the focus of his act, the duo of <A href=3D"http://www.allmusic.com=/cg/amg.dll?p=3Damg&sql=3D11:r69ss31ya3xg">Cheech Marin and <A =href=3D"http://www.allmusic.com/cg/amg.dll?p=3Damg&sql=3D11:blf5zfjoeh2=k">Tommy Chong emerged from a cloud of pot smoke, simultaneously =championing and lampooning the stoner community which became the team's =most ardent supporters; although derided by critics and dismissed by the =general populace, the team's stature as counterculture heroes was =unquestioned, and for both aging hippies and dazed-and-confused teens, =their comedy defined an era.=20
The team began to take shape in the late 1960s when, after entering =show business as a guitarist in Bobby Taylor and the Vancouvers, Chong= established City Works, a wild improvisational troupe later joined by <A =href=3D"http://www.allmusic.com/cg/amg.dll?p=3Damg&sql=3D11:et2uak8kgm3=c">Richard "Cheech" Marin. When City Works dissolved, Cheech and =Chong continued as a duo, formulating a musical comedy act. The =music proved short-lived, however, when audiences began reacting favorably =to the team's spacy pothead raps; after establishing their comic persona, =the duo rarely deviated from the course =97 for record after record and =film after film, they remained blissed-out stoners, their humor locked in =the druggy stasis of the doper mentality. Tommy Chong looks back on =his career with Shadoe Steele while on tour in Stamford Connecticut.

MADPOD #150 Crash Test Dummies Interview

MADPOD #150 Crash Test Dummies Interview

With their clever, smug lyrics and cloying folk-tinged melodies, theCrash Test Dummies were a perfect rock band for affluent '90s collegestudents and yuppies. Their first album was a huge hit in their nativeCanada, but only gained a small cult following in other parts of theworld. Thanks to former Talking Head Jerry Harrison's clean,radio-friendly production, the follow-up, God Shuffled His Feet (1993),broke big in the States and, in turn, Europe. The first single from thealbum, "MMM MMM MMM MMM," became a worldwide Top Ten hit, making thegroup a minor sensation with their self-consciously bizarre lyrics andsinger/songwriter Brad Roberts' deep baritone. A Worm's Life followedin 1996, and three years later the Crash Test Dummies resurfaced withGive Yourself a Hand. Frontman Brad Roberts resurfaced in fall 2000with a solo album, Crash Test Dude, a collection of acoustic hits fromthe Crash Test Dummies and eclectic covers. It was also during thistime that Roberts suffered a serious car crash, almost losing his arm. Seven months later, however, Roberts returned to the Crash Test Dummiescircuit to issue I Don't Care That You Don't Mind, a brand-new batch ofsongs written with lobster fishermen/musicians whom Roberts met duringhis rehabilitation. Late 2001 and early 2002 saw more solo albums frommembers (Ellen Reid's Cinderellen and Mitch Dorge's As Trees Walking)and the Dummies became more Brad Roberts' project than a traditionalband. A new three-piece unit with Reid, Brad Roberts and originalbassist Dan Roberts released the Christmas album Jingle All the Way inlate 2002 but limited distribution made the album hard to find. Thealbum was reissued in late 2003 along with a new album, Puss 'n' Boots, with Reid and Dan Roberts adding to what was originally planned as aBrad Roberts solo album.
Brad Roberts joins Shadoe from New York City

Dolby Mentions that "Podcasting and Satellite Radio is the FUTURE!..."

Thomas Dolby became one of the most recognizable figures of the synth-pop movement of early-'80s new wave. Largely, this was due to his skillful marketing. Dolby promoted himself as a kind of mad scientist, an egghead that had successfully harnessed the power of synthesizers and samplers, using them to make catchy pop and light electro-funk. Before he launched a solo career, Dolby had worked as a studio musician, technician, and songwriter; his most notable work as a songwriter was "New Toy," which he wrote for Lene Lovich, and Whodini's "Magic's Wand." In 1981, he launched a solo career, which resulted in a number of minor hits and two big hits — "She Blinded Me with Science" (1982) and "Hyperactive" (1984). Following "Hyperactive," he began producing more frequently, as well as exploring new synthesizer and computer technology. Thomas speaks with Shadoe Steele from his home in Northern California's Bay area.

show airing this weekend!

Click on Archives on Right.In terms of both record sales and career longevity, Barry Manilow is one of the most successful adult contemporary singers ever. That success hasn't necessarily translated to respect (or even ironic hipster appreciation) in most quarters;

Manilow's music has been much maligned by critics and listeners alike, particularly the romantic ballads that made his career, which were derided as maudlin schlock even during his heyday. It's true that Manilow's taste for swelling choruses and lush arrangements often bordered on bombastic, but unlike many of his MOR peers, Manilow wasn't aiming to make smooth, restrained background music -- he conceived of himself as a pop entertainer and all-around showman in the classic mold, and his performances and stage shows were accordingly theatrical. Manilow dominated pop music during the latter half of the '70s like few other performers, spinning off a long series of hit singles (including 13 number-one hits on the adult contemporary charts) and platinum albums that essentially made the Arista label. The well began to run dry by the early '80s; no longer a superstar expected to deliver blockbuster hits, Manilow was free to explore his long-held taste for swing, pop standards, and Broadway show tunes, which dominated his albums from the mid-'80s on. He has continued to record steadily, and his popularity never completely eroded, as evidenced by the number three chart debut of his 2002 greatest-hits package, Ultimate Manilow. In an extremely rare radio interview (1 of 6 total in 10 years) Manilow speaks with Shadoe Steele regarding his individual hits, entertainment career and personal life.

He remained in Los Angeles, eventually connecting with fellow singers Cory Wells and Danny Hutton and forming the legendary Three Dog Night in 1968. They met with massive success, scoring 18 consecutive Top 20 singles, including number ones like "Mama Told Me Not to Come," "Joy to the World," and "Black and White." With success came the trappings of the rock & roll lifestyle, which for Negron focused on drugs: by the time Three Dog Night split in 1977, he had a 2,000-dollar-a-day habit.
Remaining in the grip of addiction for almost two decades, Negron wasted away to 126 pounds and attempted 36 rehab programs unsuccessfully. His stay at the Cri-Help center, however, found him truly rehabilitated and ready to perform again -- with an extra octave added to his vocal range. Negron restarted his career by opening for Howie Mandel's 1994 Atlantic City show, and the following year he released his debut album, Am I Still in Your Heart. Negron now divides his time between raising his family, performing, lecturing, and working with anti-drug organizations like Musicians Assistance Program (MAP), MusiCares, and Cri-Help. 1999 saw the release of his multi-million selling biography, "Three Dog Nightmare", and his second album, Long Road Back, the book's musical counterpart. In his first one-on-one radio chat since 1988, Chuck speaks to Shadoe Steele on the roller-coaster ride of his life!
Email Us: madpod@gmail.comSkype: (702) 866-9502 country code +1, United StatesUser name: jadly6
buy Three Dog Night Music on itunes

MADPOD 134 DOROTHY MOORE INTERVIEW "Misty Blue" Rhythm and Blues

The legendary Dorothy Moore had two huge hits in 1976 for Malaco with "Misty Blue" and "Funny How Time Slips Away." "Misty Blue" was a number two R&B and number three pop single and a sizzling piece of heartache soul, while "Funny How Time Slips Away" wasn't as definitive a soul recasting of Willie Nelson's composition as Joe Hinton's version, but it did better on the charts, reaching number seven R&B. Moore continued on Malaco through the '80s, landing one more Top Ten R&B hit in 1977 with "I Believe You." She signed with the reactivated Volt label in the late '80s and recorded two LPs for them, Time Out for Me and Winner, before returning to Malaco for the rest of her '90s work. Farish Street released her holiday album, Please Come Home for Christmas, in 2002. Dorothy joins Shadoe Steele from her home near Jackson Mississippi.

Music intro:from Podsafe Music Network: Carrie Pettit
shadoe Interview:
From his days as the singing mainstay of "The Limeliters" through a long solo career that's seen its share of hits, Glenn Yarbrough has been a respected interpreter of folk and popular music. He's had a top hit in "Baby, The Rain Must Fall" and his interpretation of "Seven Daffodils" is the benchmark against which love songs are measured. From his days in a boys choir through today, Glenn's powerful voice has rung with lusty conviction about all that he cares about. Listen to Glenn Yarbrough. He's what singing should be. Others - take note! Glenn and Shadoe chat from his home in Fallbrook California.

MADPOD Interview with Joshua Kadison
Prolific pianist Joshua Kadison began playing and writing songs when he was 12; the influences on his emotional music includeCole Porter, Rodgers & Hart and Gershwin. Kadison left his Hollywood Hills home after his mother died, eventually ending up in Nashville, later to Southern California releasing the huge pop and AC smash singles "Jesse", "Beautiful In Your Eyes", "Picture Postcards From L.A.", after being signed by SBK and issuing Painted Desert Serenade. "Delilah Blue" and "Vanishing America" followed with fine, well-crafted theme-related material. The "Venice Beach Sessions (Volumes 1 & 2)" are the songsmith's latest work with catchy hooks and carefully worded lyrics. MADPOD#109 1974 Young Podcaster, Nixon, Patty Hearst
Over the holiday I found some tapes of me at age 9 or 10 playing
radio station. Of course a young podcaster in the making.
But, the significants is that I also captured news clips from
the radio about Nixon's impeachment, Congressional Hearings, and
Patty Hearst being kidnapped. Over 32 Years ago. Pretty Cool.
(Don't worry, it's only 3 minutes long).

MADPOD.com #108 Neil Sedaka Interview Christmas Special

Neil Sedaka speaks to Shadoe Steele from his New York City apartment.
Coming from a doo wop background, yet classically trained, Neil Sedaka composed more than a 1,000 tunes, including a dozen major pop hits he corded between 1959 to 1963 that were co-authored with Howard Greenfield, his lyrist until 1972.
Singer, songwriter, and pianist Neil Sedaka enjoyed two distinct periods of commercial success in two slightly different styles of pop music: first, as a teen pop star in the late 1950s and early '60s, then as a singer of more mature pop/rock in the 1970s. In both phases, Sedaka, a classically trained pianist, composed the music for his hits, which he sang in a boyish tenor. And throughout, even when his performing career was at a low ebb, he served as a songwriter for other artists, resulting in a string of hits year in and year out, whether by him or someone else. For himself, he wrote eight U.S. Top Ten pop hits, including the chart-toppers "Breaking Up Is Hard to Do," "Laughter in the Rain," and "Bad Blood." The most successful cover of one of his compositions was Captain & Tennille's recording of "Love Will Keep Us Together," another number one.

MADPOD.com #94 After The Fire, DER KOMMISSAR Peter Banks Interview

In 1983 After The Fire scored a U.S. Top Ten hit with "Der Kommissar." Peter "Memory" Banks joins Shadoe Steele live from the UK with a plethora of great stories and musical memories of the band's early days right up through some interesting current projects.
After the Fire was originally formed in England in 1974 by master keyboard player Peter Banks.
The lineup disbanded a few years later, upon which point Banks re-formed the band with guitarist Andy Piercy, bass player Nick Battle, and drummer Ivor Twiddell. The new lineup played the London music scene and eventually became a favorite at the Marquee on London's Wardour Street. In 1978, the band cut their first album, "Signs of Change", on their own Rapid label. Their musical style at the time sounded like early Genesis and Greenslade. After increasing popularity, the band signed to CBS to record their second album, "Laser Love", which marked a change in direction influenced by the recent emergence of new wave. Battle left and was replaced by guitarist John Russell, who was previously in Narnia with Banks. Peter Banks changed his name to "Memory" Banks to avoid confusion with the ex-Yes guitarist with the same name, while Piercy switched to bass. The single "One Rule for You," produced by Rupert Hine, went U.K. Top 40. The band's third album, 80F, was less successful. Twiddell was later replaced by Peter King (ex-Flys). 1981's "Batteries Not Included" was a more commercial effort, but grand-scale success eluded the band until 1983 when they scored a U.S. Top Ten hit with "Der Kommissar.

MADPOD.com #93 Ozark Mountain Devils Interview most popular of mid-'70s country-rock outfits

The Ozark Mountain Daredevils were among the most popular of mid-'70s country-rock outfits, slotting in chronologically between the Eagles and Firefall, although they were never remotely as successful as either. As exponents of '70s country-rock, the group rode a wave of success for five years on A&M Records and survived in some form into the 1990s, with a following just large enough to justify occasional record releases.
The sextet was formed in Missouri during the early '70s, consisting of guitarists John Dillon and Steve />Cash, blues harpist/singer/guitarist Randle Chowning, drummer/guitarist/singer Larry Lee, keyboard player Buddy Brayfield, and bassist-vocalist Michael Granda, and was signed to A&M Records in 1973. Their first album, recorded under the supervision of producer Glyn Johns, was a critical success and yielded a Top 30 hit in "If You Want to Get to Heaven." A year later, they had the biggest hit in their history, "Jackie Blue," a mellow piece of country-rock that got to number three on the charts and still gets played occasionally as a '70s oldie. They had an ethereal edge to their sound and songs that made them especially appealing to college-age listeners during the middle of the decade -- sort of Steely Dan with a country twang. Their self-titled debut album set the tone for the group's next four releases, although by 1978's Don't Look Down, the sound was somewhat closer to country-pop than country-rock. Collegiate girls and their boyfriends could relate to them, and a sense of humor didn't hurt (their third LP, The Car Over the Lake Album had cover art featuring -- you guessed it -- a car over a lake).

Lee, Dillon (who later played with fellow Daredevil Steve Cash on the Waylon Jennings/Jessi Colter White Mansions concept album), and Chowning authored most of the songs that anyone knows ("Jackie Blue," "Following the Way I Feel," "Fly Away Home".)
The group enjoyed success primarily on FM radio from 1973 until 1978 -- they switched labels to CBS in 1980, losing Lee and Chowning by the end of the decade but picking up Buddy Emmons on steel guitar and Rune Walle on mandolin. The group ceased recording activity in the 1980s, but reformed and began making records again in the mid-'90s. Founding member John Dillon joins Shadoe live from his home in Springfield Missouri.

MADPOD 90 HOT Child n the City "Nick Gilder" Interview

Nick Gilder began playing with Vancouver-based Sweeney Todd. The band split in 1977 after two albums.
(Sweeney Todd and If Wishes Were Horses) when he and bandmate Jimmy McCullouch moved to Los Angeles. That same year, Gilder began a solo career, signing to Chrysalis and releasing You Know Who You Are. His second album, City Nights, produced the platinum number one single "Hot Child in the City" in 1978. Though Gilder released several other albums (including 1979's Frequency and 1981's Body Talk Muzak), he never approached his earlier success. Nick speaks to Shadoe Steele from his home recording studio in his first radio interview with the United States since 1992.
