Men @ Work Interview-Who Can It Be Now? MadPod.com
Standard Podcast: Play Now | Play in Popup

Biography:

Men at Work were one of the more surprising success stories of the new
wave era, rocketing out of Australia in 1982 to become the most
successful artist of the year. With its Police-styled rhythms, catchy
guitar hooks, wailing saxophones, and off-kilter sense of humor, the
band’s debut album Business as Usual became an international
blockbuster, breaking the American record for the most weeks a debut
spent at the top of the charts. Their funny, irreverent videos became
MTV favorites, helping send “Who Can It Be Now?” and “Down Under” to
number one. Men at Work’s momentum sustained them through their second
album, 1983’s Cargo, before the bottom fell out of the band’s
popularity. After releasing Two Hearts in 1985, Men at Work broke up,
becoming one of the better-remembered phenomenons of new wave.

Lead singer and founding member Colin James Hay speaks with Shadoe from
his US home in Los Angeles.

Nick Gilder began playing with Vancouver-base

Nick Gilder began playing with Vancouver-based Sweeney Todd. The band split in 1977 after two albums.
(Sweeney Todd and If Wishes Were Horses) when he and bandmate Jimmy McCullouch moved to Los Angeles. That same year, Gilder began a solo career, signing to Chrysalis and releasing You Know Who You Are. His second album, City Nights, produced the platinum number one single “Hot Child in the City” in 1978. Though Gilder released several other albums (including 1979’s Frequency and 1981’s Body Talk Muzak), he never approached his earlier success. Nick speaks to Shadoe Steele from his home recording studio in his first radio interview with the United States since 1992.

MADPOD Tommy Chong Interview, Reunite after 25 Years!
Standard Podcast: Play Now | Play in Popup

At their peak in the 1970s, Cheech and Chong represented the mainstream,

embodiment of the attitudes and lifestyles of the underground drug
culture. Much as W.C. Fields shot to fame by making
alcohol the focus of his act, the duo of Cheech Marin and Tommy Chong emerged from a cloud of pot smoke, simultaneously
championing and lampooning the stoner community which became the team’s
most ardent supporters; although derided by critics and dismissed by the
general populace, the team’s stature as counterculture heroes was
unquestioned, and for both aging hippies and dazed-and-confused teens,
their comedy defined an era.

The team began to take shape in the late 1960s when, after entering =
show business as a guitarist in Bobby Taylor and the Vancouvers, Chong
established City Works, a wild improvisational troupe later joined by Richard “Cheech” Marin. When City Works dissolved, Cheech and
Chong continued as a duo, formulating a musical comedy act. The
music proved short-lived, however, when audiences began reacting favorably
to the team’s spacy pothead raps; after establishing their comic persona,
the duo rarely deviated from the course — for record after record and
film after film, they remained blissed-out stoners, their humor locked in
the druggy stasis of the doper mentality. Tommy Chong looks back on
his career with Shadoe Steele while on tour in Stamford Connecticut.
